Probably handknit red rough wool mittens from my grandmother. I can still, to this day, remember how itchy they felt but boy did I love wearing them. I knew they were special because my grandma had made them for ME! ;-)

I wish I had learnt to knit back then, we would have had a great bond.

My grandmother used to make every grandchild a pair of pajamas for Christmas. One year, instead of the long flannel nightgown, my sister and I got some gowns made from red knit. They were floor length, had turtlenecks and elastic waists. We thought they looked like evening gowns lol and felt so glamorous when we wore them.

My nana used to sew my clothes when I was in grade school, and she made me a green gingham shirt and skirt. The skirt had a drawstring ruching on the side that you could tighten to pull up the edge of the skirt -- if that makes sense. Little cap sleeves and a button front, it was awesome.

Because I am a crafter, most people don't give me handmade things (silly people). They assume that I could just make one myself. But when I was a little girl, my Grandma Margie knit me a little mint green and white cardigan with white carnation buttons and an Irish cap to match, and I loved that set for years and years. I still have it, in fact, and have never stopped loving it. leafygreenes@gmail.com

Not too many crafters in my circle, but my most memorable gift is a handmade one. My great aunt (who passed last year at the age of 96) was the crafter in the family. She was a quilter (all hand-sewn), knitter and embroiderer. When I was about 8, she knit my sister and me a striped crewneck sweater in our school colors. They were beautiful (still are, I keep mine in my cedar chest), without a missed stitch. My sister and I were so excited to get them, at that age school color loyalty was VERY important. We both pulled our sweaters out of their boxes and put them on - or I should say attempted to put them on. The sweaters were perfectly sized except for one thing - the neckholes were about 2 sized too small. I'll never forget crying every time my mother made me wear that sweater. It hurt so much to pull it over my head, but the pain was worth all the laughs we've had over the years.

Good luck today & thanks for helping me laugh again about my favorite handmade gift!
